Save, protect, and elevate the lives of sighthounds and other animals via rescue, R+ training, behavior modification, & emotional rehabilitation, public education and assistance programs, and safe haven for abandoned, abused, traumatized, fearful, and neglected sighthounds, and other dogs as funds and space allow. Provide public awareness and education campaigns designed to prevent abuse and ensure care, safety, and prevention of neglect and harm. Offer public outreach and assistance to encourage and help create better conditions for companion animals. When appropriate, provide careful placement with free training assistance and lifelong affiliation & failsafe, to ensure each homed dog's continued safety and well-being. Be available to assist and encourage, to the extent they have interest, other rescue organizations, shelters, and animal welfare and behavior professionals to work together to ensure the ever-improving care and safety of rescued, rehabilitated, and/or rehomed animals throughout their natural lives. As animal professionals, not only can we do better to protect them, it is our duty to do so, from the very moment we have the capability.

Hound Sanctuary is the first and only all-breed sighthound specialist rescue sanctuary of its kind in the United States. Serving ALL SIGHTHOUND breeds (Afghan hounds, Borzoi, Canarian Podencos, Galgos, Greyhounds, Ibizan hounds, Irish Wolfhounds, Lurchers, Pharaoh hounds, Podencos, Salukis, Scottish Deerhounds, Silken Windhounds, Whippets, etc.), Hound Sanctuary provides safe haven, rescue, behavior analysis and modification, and rehabilitation of abandoned, abused, neglected, and otherwise need/at risk sighthounds—and other dogs as funds and space allow—locally, nationally, and internationally. We offer public outreach, education, and adoption to exceptional adopters. Additionally, we provide lifelong check-ins and safety net for every HS dog, and adopter services including detailed care and safety instructions, an adopter’s support group, and R+ training and behavior modification assistance.
Currently we rescue dogs from local and regional shelters, craigslist ads, private owner surrenders, and in cooperation with rescue partners in Spain—the locale that in late 2013 was the impetus for Hound Sanctuary’s founding, which was inspired by the adoption of our sweet senior Ibizan hound Sioraf earlier the same year.

Q: Why do some dogs remain with us for longer times than others?

A: Because our mission entails that we not only save dogs but also protect the dogs we save, the dogs are fostered here with us where they safe and well until the right adopter is available. Sometimes that takes a long time. Hound Sanctuary is a quality, not a quantity, rescue, so we allow however much time is needed for each dog.

Q: Do you take in problem cases?

A: We try to help every sighthound in true need if we are able. We specialize in fearful, traumatized, and shy dogs, and we are trained in and use positive reinforcement training / behavioral analysis and modification. (By the way, behavior modification does *not* require the use of punishment or aversion. It came to our attention recently that some have this incorrect idea.) Please feel free to contact us if you need help with a dog and let’s explore the possibilities.

Q: Do you only serve Oregon?

A: We serve all of the United States and some other countries, with regarding to education, outreach, assistance with dogs, and intake of dogs in need. Generally, adopters must be within 6 hours driving distance of the sanctuary or an established volunteer; locations include some of the west coast from lower Canada to Northern California (with a few exceptions) and southern Maine. The sanctuary is on the north Oregon coast, so the closer you to that area the better, in terms of driving distance.
