Friends of Surry County Animal Control - NC

This volunteer based page was created to showcase the animals at Surry County Animal Control (Dobson, NC) that are seeking rescue.

This page is managed by volunteers. It is not managed by the employees of Surry County Animal Control.

SURRY COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL IS A KILL SHELTER. ALL ANIMALS ON THIS PAGE ARE ON DEATH ROW AND ARE AT IMMEDIATE RISK FOR EUTHANASIA.

All animals on this page are seeking rescue immediately. They are not available to the public for adoption and are listed as rescue only. However, the presence of approved adopters can at times help rescues decide to pull a shelter animal. Please contact the page with adoption interest so that it might be passed along to any interested rescues and the shelter. Please note that most rescues require potential adopters to apply, submit vet and personal references, allow a home check, pay an adoption fee and sign an adoption contract. The goal is to ensure the animal finds the right match in a long term, forever home, and does find itself surrendered or abandoned in the future.

NOTE: The shelter conducts a behavioral assessment to determine who is a perfect match for the adoption program. Those animals that do not enter the adoption program are listed as rescue only (the animals on this page). This can be for very simple and easily addressed reasons as needing some leash training, being a little shy, etc. Because the shelter is very small, has very little foot traffic, and does not have an overabundance of adopters seeking pets it is extremely important that the animals in the adoption program are generally well trained and well socialized already. Also, note that if the adoption area has an overabundance of a certain breed the adoption rates in the shelter have a chance of declining due to lack of choice to the public. It is a sad reality that sweet animals may not be listed as available for adoption.

The purpose of this page is to:

1. Network animals to rescues, fosters, adoptive homes, sponsors, transporters and networkers.

2. Connect lost pets with their owners.

3. Educate the public regarding the state of affairs of animals needing rescue at Surry County Animal Control. Our belief and hope is that if the community is better informed regarding how many needy animals there are at Surry County Animal Control, they will then make better informed decisions in regard to pet ownership. This includes better decisions regarding initiating pet ownership (is this a lifetime commitment?), vetting practices and spay/neuter. Knowledge is power.

Note:

Owner surrenders are not held if there is no space.

Strays are given 72 hours legal hold time. After that they can be euthanized due to space or other reasons.

There are approximately 10 runs for owner surrenders, strays and bite dogs. Note that there are additional runs for adoption program dogs; the dogs on this page are not in the adoption program (unless noted otherwise).
