In early 2015, Guilford County Commissioners were made aware of serious problems in the Guilford County Animal Shelter. Still, in June, Commissioners gave a new contract to the same non-profit to continue running the shelter with reporting stipulations and open meetings.
By July, 2015, thanks to the Davidson County Animal Shelter who was also run by the same non-profit, the two shelters went under investigation.
In August, the NC Dept. of Agriculture found so many incidents of animal neglect in both shelters, it pulled the license of the non-profit running the shelters and arrested multiple employees. Not enough people were WATCHING and the county officials never even audited the non-profit operations in almost ten years. Thank you Davidson County, for bringing change to our animal shelter management in Guilford.
New management kept most of the same staff from the shamefully negligent non-profit. By September, they had banned photography in the shelter even in public areas and even by volunteers. They went on to halt new volunteer sign up, turn down free professional photography, send out contagious sick animals to foster homes, reduce adoption days every week, block citizens from their Facebook page, and as recently as May 2016, even terminate a personal Adoptapet.com account held by a citizen to market shelter pets, when the shelter had no account of their own.
Facebook has been asked to take our page down, but Facebook believes in free speech and has evaluated our page to find we are well within our rights to market homeless shelter pets in our own county animal shelter and question how county employees behave there.
It is our purpose to be a page with information pertaining to Guilford County animals. We keep albums of shelter pets, but also post other homeless pets in our county along with animal-related events, services and information. We will absolutely exercise our free speech right to question things we do not feel are conducive to saving the lives of animals. We will absolutely call out people and policies that hide public information and restrict public involvement. Guilford County Animal Service is operated by our tax money. It is not acceptable to spend tax money and shut out the hard-working people that supply it when they are asking to help save animals.
