North Fork Animal Welfare League to the rescue! Merrie is a young puppy who was left in a dumpster to die on Christmas eve. Angels swooped in to save her: she went from neglected, abused, and abandoned to rescued and on the road to recovery in a matter of minutes. Merrie is the Christmas Miracle Pup! A Good Samaritan found her in the trash covered in bite wounds unable to walk. A local veterinarian opened his clinic on Christmas Eve to take x-rays and do triage. Beyond the obvious injuries was a diagnosis of Puppy Swimmer's Syndrome. This hampered Merrie's ability to walk properly. While the causes of the syndrome are debatable, the treatment is not. Merrie would need an experienced caretaker willing to make her a priority. Gillian Wood Pultz opened her home and heart to the puppy in need. As executive director of North Fork Animal Welfare League, she's rehabilitated many animals. Merrie was welcomed with open arms. On the morning of December 26th, Dr. Dan Damato of North Fork Animal Hospital affixed the hobbles he created to Merrie's back and front legs. The customized treatment will help her heal properly. At only a few weeks old, Merrie's journey is just beginning. Team Merrie has also expanded: Gillian's niece, Grace Maschinski is pitching in as is Sunrise Coach Lines, with Gabriella Garren providing extra TLC. She needs physical therapy and careful monitoring of her progress under a watchful team. This is Merrie's story of love, hope, and ultimately, happily-ever-after.
