Humane Society of West Michigan
Our mission is to promote the humane treatment and responsible care of animals in West Michigan through education, example, placement and protection.
Our vision is to build a more compassionate community where all animals are given the care they deserve. We cannot achieve our vision on our own. It requires collaboration with animal welfare organizations, community partners and our supporters in order to achieve our common goals.

π¦ Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful, and we'd like to thank @bark_nation for bringing #KONGsgiving to our shelter dogs again this year! π
.
Each tough chew toy was filled with all the pet-safe Thanksgiving goodies that a pup could ask for--honey baked ham, pumpkin, and mashed potatoes--so naturally, our dogs LOVED them! They didn't stop there, we also received a bunch of goodies for our hardworking staff and volunteers! π€©
.
Thank you to @kongcompany for donating their toys to rescue dogs all over the state of Michigan, and another warm thank you to the Barknation volunteers who prepared each treat with love and care. π
.
Our staff and our pups have so much to be thankful for, what a great way to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday! πΎ

Today we'd like to introduce you to a Thanksgiving essential that your holidays won't be complete without--Cranberry the bun! π
.
π Just like the popular Thanksgiving condiment, Cranberry is sweet and saucy, and will bring joy to any family gathering! Cranberry is a gentle, social rabbit--content to hang out and do her own thing--but also interested in hopping about, exploring, and greeting her people with friendly head bumps. This bun is neat, tidy, and completely litter trained, she'd make a wonderful free-roaming rabbit! Cranberry LOVES kale, carrots, and other yummy fresh treats. This big beautiful bunny is full of heart, absolutely adorable, and hoping to find her furever home in time for the holidays! π
.
πΎ If you'd like to learn more about Cranberry, check out our adorable #TakeoverTuesday stories, or visit our website linked in our bio. π

Have you ever felt like a fish out of water? π₯Ί
.
Desperate to leave a loud party and head back to the comfort of your own home? If you've ever felt shy or uncomfortable in an unfamiliar situation--then you understand how these poor kitties feel! π
.
β οΈ We just accepted a group of fearful, under socialized cats into our care from a large-scale rescue, and they NEED YOU! We're looking for foster homes willing to help these scaredy-cats blossom into the confident, happy cats they're meant to be.
.
The busy shelter environment is super scary for these little ones, so these cats need a quiet, calm environment, like a spare room or bathroom to settle into, and patient, compassionate fosters who are willing to give them time to open up and come out of their shells. We will provide all the supplies, medical care, and lots of tips and tricks regarding socialization to help you and your new furry friend! Most of these cats are under a year old, and all of them have every potential to become happy social pets. Helping a shy cat blossom is such a rewarding experience--it's so great to see their transformation from fearful to frisky and fun! πΈ
.
πΎ If you're interested in this opportunity, please sign-up on our website linked in our bio, and specify that you'd like to help out our shy cats! π

π€ We LOVE receiving follow-ups from our HSWM alumni, whether it's eight days or eight years after being adopted! We recently received this Happy Tail from Chad, who wanted to let us know how well his pup Molly was doing! π
.
He says, "Hi! I adopted Molly back in June of 2013, and I just wanted to provide an update that sheβs happy and healthy and very loved!
.
She moved to Memphis, TN with me for a few years, and even out to Santa Barbara, CA for a few months! Weβre now living in the Chicago suburbs, and I know sheβs excited for the first snow. Thanks for providing the missing piece in my life!"
.

Getting hungry for a midday snack? π
.
We recommend treating yourself to a heaping helping of cuteness from Tortellini and Alfredo! π
.
π© These bonded sisters are always dressed in their finest tuxedos and ready for any fashion occasion! Both Tortellini and Alfredo and are social, sweet, and LOVE to be petted, though each kitty has her favorite hobbies.
.
ππ Tortellini has dubbed herself head of the neighborhood watch, and loves to gaze out a big, sunny window and watch the world go by. Alfredo, on the other hand, always wants to be where the people are, and is the perfect, quiet companion to help you with tasks around the house.
.
They are hoping to find a calm forever home where they can enjoy cat beds, wet cat food, and, of course, get lots of attention! π
.

There's just something special about senior pets! βΊοΈπ
.
Not only do we love their grey faces and gentle smiles, but we find our senior pets are always extra grateful to have homes to call their own!
.
π₯° Did you know that November is #AdoptASeniorPetMonth ? When adding a furry friend to your family, consider adopting a senior! Often already trained, wise, and lower-energy--senior animals make excellent companions. PLUS HSWM's "Silver Paw" pets are fee-waived to help them find furever homes! πΈ
.
πΆ Take senior sweetheart Saylor for example! Her foster mom says, "This is our first time fostering and we couldn't have asked for a sweeter dog to care for. Saylor is 8 years young and enjoys long walks, watching birds and chipmunks in the yard, and hanging out with her people as much as possible. She loves attention and will let you pet her for hours if you are willing. This gentle giant is also content to lay outside and simply watch the world go by. She loves her Kong filled with peanut butter, is such a good girl, and is friendly with our cat."
.
πΎ If you'd like to learn more about our other Silver Paw pets available for adoption, check out today's #TakeoverTuesday stories!

Meet cutie patootie, Kimmy Gibbler! π₯Ίπ
.
βοΈ More like the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt than Kimmy Gibbler of Full House--Kimmy has been through so much in her two years of life--but she never lets anything get her down! Kimmy has had a rough past, and has the scars to show it, but despite that, she still has so much love to give! This little lady is a cuddle-bug cutie-pie wiggle-butt, she LOVES people, and is so darned sweet!! π
.
Kimmy would love her very own furever or foster home, and she's holding out hope she'll find one soon! In the words of Kimmy herself, "giving up isn't my jam. My jams are grape, jock, and space!" π€£

Looking for a weekend bud? π€
.
Then meet today's #FosterFriday friend, Barnaby the bun! π°
.
His foster says, "Barnaby is a super sweet boy who loves snacks and head rubs. Give him some celery, carrots, or, apples and he will be your best friend forever! π₯π₯π
.
π¦ He loves cuddling up with a blanket inside a box, and his fur is the absolute softest to pet. Barnaby is litter trained and does not chew anything but his own toys. We call him 'the cat that hops' because he is so well-mannered and loves to roam free and see what everyone is up to! He's a big boy with a big heart, ready to find his forever home. π"
.
πΎ If you'd like to bring home Barnaby, or any of our other small animals, visit our website linked in our bio! π

β οΈ CALLING ALL KITTEN LOVERS! π
.
Despite the weather cooling down, kitten season is still going strong, and these growing babies eat a LOT each day! We have so many hungry kittens, that we're COMPLETELY OUT of high-calorie kitten wet food to help them grow big and strong! π
.
If you can find it in your heart to give, our kittens thank you from the bottom of their rumbly tumblies! π₯Ί
.
πTo make a donation, please drop off items in the donation bin in our entryway, anytime during our open hours, or you can donate through our Amazon or Chewy Wish Lists on our website, linked in our bio, and have them mailed to us at 3077 Wilson Drive NW, Grand Rapids MI, 49534π
.

P.E.T.S. stands for Providing Emergency Temporary Shelter, and this innovative program will provide emergency housing for pets affected by a natural disaster, eviction, domestic violence, owner homelessness, and other temporary care situations.
.
β€οΈ HSWM takes pride in our ability to assist our community by keeping families together through times of hardship. We recognize that individuals from all walks of life may find themselves making life-changing decisions on their petβs behalf while seeking a stable home environment. We strive to provide a network of resources for the pets and people in need in our community, and we are excited to offer this new service!
