RSPCA Lockwood Centre for Donkeys and Horses

RSPCA Lockwood Centre for Horses and Donkeys is an equine specific centre which rehabilitates and rehomes horses, ponies and donkeys. We also have a resident herd of donkeys who remain in our permanent care.

John and Kay Lockwood set up the Lockwood Home of Rest for Old and Sick Donkeys during the 1950's. On moving to the current site during the 1960's they quickly amassed a menagerie of animals and by 1982 it was reported they had over 700 animals, including 500 donkeys!

Sadly John Lockwood passed away in the early 1980’s aged 79. His wife Kay continued the running of the Sanctuary until she herself passed away in August 2005, leaving the RSPCA as the beneficiary of the estate.

At this time there were insufficient funds available to be able to replace the by now dilapidated buildings. Luckily the RSPCA were able to raise the necessary funds to start a program of re-building projects, ripping down the dangerous old stable blocks and replacing them with new ones. There is still much to be done, but the Centre now has some new and much improved barns, stables and field shelters.

In more recent years there has been an increase in equine rescues due to mistreatment, abuse and abandonment. During 2015 RSPCA Lockwood rehomed over 70 horses and ponies and rehabilitated many more.
