Alexandra Bastedo has run an animal sanctuary for nearly 30 years. The Alexandra Bastedo Champions Animal Sanctuary, based near Worthing, is a sanctuary in the true sense of the word offering a place of safety to unwanted animals and birds in need of care and protection.
We presently have in our care many mini-shetland ponies, horses and ponies, donkeys, sheep, pot-bellied pigs, and birds. We also care for over 30 cats - this figure changing as we successfully re-home where possible, or when we accept new cats.We are building a new cattery at the moment so we can take in more abandoned felines. For various reasons many of the animals that we accept cannot be rehomed due to age, temperament or for medical reasons, and to these we offer care and a home at the sanctuary for the rest of their lives including undertaking all their food and medical costs.
To look after all these animals and birds we are fortunate to have the assistance of about 50 unpaid volunteers who come to help out every day of the year in all weathers, and without whom we just could not continue.
The sanctuary relies heavily on public support for funds to maintain the care we offer. To this end we offer the opportunity to make a donation, to adopt an animal or to become a Friend of the sanctuary. Every penny we receive is spent solely on the welfare of the animals in our care.
