Big Island Dog Rescue

We are on a mission to bring the kill rate of adoptable dogs at the humane societies in Hawaii to 0 by transferring dogs from Hawaii to mainland facilities

Eliminate euthanasia of adoptable dogs by transferring them to the mainland, educating our community, preventing overpopulation by supporting spay/neuter clinics. Working toward a sustainable pet population.

Late January 2015 our almost 4 year old daughter was told about the harsh reality of euthanasia as we were walking through the kennels at our local humane society. Finnley, our daughter, undaunted by this talk continued to patrol the kennels, stopping at each, and talking to them as if they were long lost friends. As she came closer, to a kennel of a dog that was in jeopardy, her words floated up to our ear. What we thought was pacifying puppy chat actually turned out to be a solemn vow, saying "don't worry puppy, my daddy's going to save you." Then looking squarely at us and saying "And we always keep our promises, right daddy?" As the words resonated, my wife and I looked at each other, never questioning 'if' we would keep Finn's promise, but how. Finnley then increased the stakes by, in a continuation of her thought, looking at the the kennel worker ready to take the dog Finn was currently scratching, Frodo and said as matter of fact "My daddy is going to save them all". Smiled and returned to the dog she had just saved with her words. I, her daddy, was going to stay the superhero she thought me to be for as long as possible, where I doubted myself, she did not, I will cherish that forever.
My wife and I began networking, planning, and winging it, with no real idea what we were doing. Within a week Frodo was out of danger, and within another week he was adopted in Oregon. We began transferring the dogs to adoptable shelters on the mainland with high adoption rates and low supply.
Our support caught fire, and so many great people wanted to help. We now have a solid network, a solid infrastructure and just need funding to keep operations flowing smoothly. Operating costs are about $6,000 per month. We have been actively fundraising, but again, we are fledglings and need some expertise.
With Finns promise we have saved quite a few dogs and more important spread the Aloha with everyone this story touches.
We appreciate all of our support. If you believe you can help in some way, please feel free to contact us. Mahalo Nui Loa, The Auteles
