The Lower South Coast SPCA which is situated off Seaslopes Rd in Uvongo is a non-profit Organisation dedicated to animal welfare. We cover an area of approximately 7,200 square kms starting from Mtwalume to the South of the Wild Coast Sun and inland to Harding.

As with all SPCA’s in South Africa the Lower South Coast SPCA is steered by a competent Management Committee which is made up of members of our community.
Our qualified inspectors are equipped and capable of handling the many complaints received by the public regarding animal welfare. These complaints vary from a dog stuck up a tree to kittens down a ‘long drop’ through to blatant cruelty to all animals ranging from dogs and cats, cattle and horses to wildlife. An inspector is on call 24 hours a day every day of the year to handle these complaints.

The Lower South Coast SPCA acts as the small animal pound for the Lower South Coast area. Animals found straying or abandoned are either brought in by the caring public or collected by our Inspectors. This in the hope that their rightful owners will come and collect them. Many animals are not collected or are ‘donated’ to the Lower South Coast SPCA as their owners can no longer keep them for personal reasons. We strive to find homes for all these animals. Naturally we will not just give an animal away, so prospective owners need to go through a process to ensure that the animal will be well cared for and loved. All animals being re-homed are sterilised by our veterinarians to reduce the number of unwanted pets. We are always in need of loving homes for all our animals.

The Lower South Coast SPCA receives no government funding, so fundraising is an important factor in our operations. To generate much needed funds we provide the following facilities:-

Private boarding for dogs and cats at competitive rates.
A grooming parlour which caters for dogs needing to be dipped, bathed, brushed and even clipped. Many a scruffy dog has left our grooming parlour looking like a model!
A ‘Charity Shop’ where generous members of our community bring us their unwanted bric n’ brac to sell. A visit to this little shop is a must as one will always find a bargain. Stock is always required.
Our modern veterinary clinic is open from Monday to Friday, (excluding public holidays) giving access to underprivileged people of all race groups to veterinary care for their animals. As the Lower South Coast SPCA is not in competition with the private veterinarians strict financial qualification criteria are adhered to with regards to clients.

For the past few years Lotto has financially assisted us to undertake Rural Clinics. Our qualified staff set up mobile clinics in the vast rural areas where they check the welfare
and condition of the animals owned by people who without our services would not have access to this type of assistance. Any animal that needs veterinary care is brought back to our clinic, treated and returned. During these clinics we try and advise people to have their pets sterilised at no cost to themselves. These animals are also brought back to our clinic to be operated on and returned on release.

Our volunteer programme allows members of our community to become involved in assisting at our SPCA in fields such as socialising with the animals and fundraising. These volunteers have become an integral and respected group within the Lower South Coast SPCA.

Our successful Open Days are held about four times a year where the public can come along and enjoy the activities planned for the day and most importantly go on a tour of our SPCA and learn what we do and what we provide. This is a time where many myths regarding the SPCA are dispelled and people leave with a far better understanding of the Lower South Coast SPCA.
