The HSUS Fur-Free Campaign is committed to ending cruelty and killing for fur in favor of compassion in fashion.

Fur factory operators and trappers kill millions of animals, including dogs and cats, for their fur each year. Many—perhaps half—of these animals are killed specifically for fur trim. The industry tries to keep the cruelty hidden, but suffering and death are central to fur. Better labeling laws will help you shop fur-free.

We don't intentionally kill dogs or cats for fur in America, but countless thousands of pets, hunting dogs, and "non-target" wildlife—even endangered species—die nonetheless in indiscriminate fur traps. Millions of animals are killed intentionally in fur traps.

On fur factory farms around the world, millions of raccoon dogs, rabbits, foxes, mink, chinchillas, and other animals spend their lives in wire cages, only to be killed by anal electrocution, by neck-breaking, or in gas chambers. Raccoon dogs have been documented to be skinned alive, and this type of fur is widely sold in the U.S., commonly advertised falsely or labeled as either a different type of animal fur or faux fur. It is also commonly not labeled at all.
