Kiski Valley Cat & Kitten Rescue
Kiski Valley Cat & Kitten Rescue is a no-kill, not-for-profit cat shelter.
Kiski Valley Cat & Kitten Rescue is dedicated to the prevention of cruelty and neglect towards cats by providing shelter to homeless cats until we can find them permanent homes of their own. Necessary veterinary treatment, including spaying, neutering, Distemper, and Rabies vaccinations are obtained for them. Euthanasia is not considered unless a cat is gravely ill and it needs to be done to prevent or end the cat's suffering.
In addition, KVCKR is actively involved in trapping feral cats, getting them altered, vaccinated against Rabies and Distemper, and then returning them to a location where they will be fed and provided shelter. Also, KVCKR offers discount spay and neuter referrals, as well as advice and encouragement to anyone involved in caring for abandoned or feral cats.
We attempt to educate the public regarding the plight of cats, and the importance of spaying and neutering.
Kiski Valley Cat & Kitten Rescue is a no-kill cat shelter that became a Pennsylvania not-for-profit corporation in 2000. Also in 2000, we acquired the use of several acres of land with three buildings for the beginnings of a shelter. Whether you are looking for a very young kitten, a teenager, a young adult cat, or a senior cat, KVCKR is sure to have a cat or two for you! Our cats and kittens are housed in 4 buildings in a mostly cage free, home-like environment, which aids in the adoption process. Being free to run around a room or an entire building allows our cats/kittens true personalities to be more easily determined by both our volunteers and our adopters. We also added fencing between the buildings, and cat doors so that the cats have access to totally enclosed outdoor patios. We have tried to create a pleasant environment as they await their forever homes.
A very long-term goal for the shelter is to add fencing around the perimeter of the grounds and a barn so that a MANAGEABLE number of the feral cats that find their way here could live outside on the grounds. Feral cats are wild animals and we have found that most of them are better off being released back outside after being altered. Otherwise, these cats often come down with anorexia (brought on by the stress of coming indoors for the first time in their lives), or upper respiratory infections/viruses (caused by being brought in contact with shelter animals when their recent vaccinations have not yet provided them adequate immunity). PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE THINK TWICE BEFORE TRYING TO HAVE AN ADULT CAT PLACED INTO A SHELTER WHEN THEY HAVE BEEN LIVING OUTSIDE ALL OF THEIR LIVES OR THEY HAVE BEEN IN A HOME SITUATION FOR MANY YEARS. THESE TYPES OF CATS DO NOT THRIVE IN A SHELTER.
