Colne Valley Cavies

Guinea Pig Sanctuary in Slaithwaite, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire UK

Colne Valley Cavies is a Guinea Pig Sanctuary in the heart of West Yorkshire.

All Guinea Pigs are either rescued, retired or piggies that have been taken from "free to good home adverts" to ensure safety. They are here to spend the rest of their days free from abuse and breeding and this is their forever home.

I may also foster or temporarily look after piggies from other charities..

My ethos is taken from the animal welfare acts 5 freedoms...

1. Freedom from hunger or thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour
2. Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area
3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment
4. Freedom to express (most) normal behaviour by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind
5. Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering

My piggies have all of their needs met as above and most of it is common sense when keeping any kind of animal, however at Colne Valley Cavies we are particularly keen on number 4 and all piggies live in herds with 1 neutered boar as head of the herd and then multiple sows.

Currently we have 2 herds:

The Boswell Herd is headed up by Paddy
The Greyjoy Herd is headed up by Theon

We have space in both herds for more lady piggies.....with the spring around the corner we're preparing to open up the sheds for access to the field for plenty of grazing!
