Humane Society of Rowan County - Official Site

The Humane Society of Rowan County was founded in October 1973 and chartered in March 1974. We are a non-profit volunteer animal welfare organization dedicated to the relief of suffering animals, the prevention of cruelty to animals and the extension of humane education. We do not operate a shelter at this time but depend on private homes to provide foster care for the sick or injured stray and abandoned animals that we acquire. The HSRC has been a "no-kill" rescue since its inception. Only in extreme cases when an animal is suffering and veterinarians can give no hope of recovery and good quality of life does the HSRC select euthanasia. In those rare instances, euthanasia is by injection and is administered by a veterinarian.
The Humane Society of Rowan County is NOT Rowan County Animal Control and Shelter and DOES NOT operate Rowan County Animal Control and Shelter. Rowan County Animal Control and Shelter is a division of Rowan County government. We encourage the community to understand that were it not for irresponsible pet owners and unscrupulous breeders, there would be less need for the services of Animal Control.
An average of 267 calls is received and returned by HSRC volunteers monthly many of which reflect the need for reduction in the number of unwanted cats and dogs in our community. The HSRC offers reduced cost spay/neuter services through several local veterinarians and by referral to reduced cost spay/neuter clinics.
The HSRC cooperates with other animal welfare organizations and rescue leagues in attempting to place animals in loving and appropriate homes and in other efforts promoting the welfare of animals worldwide.
