The Northern California Western Nevada Jr. Science and Humanities Symposium is dedicated to assisting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics teachers to motivate students to challenge themselves beyond their regular classroom work by encouraging the students to do independent research then recognizing and rewarding their efforts.

The Northern California Western Nevada JSHS is one of 48 regions sponsored by the Academy of Applied Science through contract with the research offices of the Army Navy and Air Force. It brings together high school students and teachers to participate in a forum which:

• Promotes original research and experimentation in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics
• Helps students to develop higher order thinking skills and gain confidence through interaction with practicing professionals and their peers with the same interests
• Supports and encourages high school teachers in addressing the attainment and mastery of state and national performance and process skills and standards by their students
• Is included in the National Association of Secondary School Principals List of Recommended Contests and Activities
