Chicago Animal Care and Control

Official page for Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC): Your guide to helping Chicago’s homeless pets by adopting, volunteering, fostering and donating.

Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) protects public safety and ensures the humane care of animals through sheltering, pet placement, education and animal law enforcement.

CACC is Chicago's largest open-admission shelter. In 2016, CACC served 15,725 animals, including strays, owner surrendered pets, court case animals, wildlife, exotic pets, and even some farm animals. Our goal is to continually increase the city's live outcome rate.

Every day CACC officers are in the field rescuing sick and injured animals, picking up strays, and investigating cruelty and neglect. We also provide life-saving care and reunite pets with their families. CACC offers a number of low cost services, including vaccine clinics.

We also adopt dogs and cats directly to the public and we partner with hundreds of Homeward Bound approved partners to transfer animals into their care for further rehabilitation and adoption. Fosters can work directly with these rescue partners to care for animals that may be too sick or young for adoption.

Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) is committed to protecting public safety and ensuring the humane care of animals through sheltering, pet placement, education, and animal law enforcement. As Chicago’s only open-admission, municipal animal shelter and control facility, CACC provides a centralized resource for animal-related services for Chicago residents, and promotes the humane stewardship of animals throughout the City.

CACC accepts stray and owner-surrendered animals and also impounds dangerous animals and animals confiscated for various reasons, including abuse and neglect. Many animals arrive at CACC injured, ill, or very scared. While at CACC, they are provided medical attention, fresh food, clean water, and opportunities for socialization, rescue, and adoption.
