The Galax Carroll Grayson Animal Shelter is a regional shelter operated jointly by the three local governments under the requirements of the Code of the Virginia. The shelter accepts animals as required under the Code and works to place animals back with their owners, adopt them to new owners, or place them with other non-profit animal welfare agencies that may be able to adopt them. Animals are transferred on a first come first serve basis, so always check with Shelter staff prior to see if an animal is still available. REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM INFORMATION

Virginia State law requires:

* Anyone adopting a shelter animal must have it spayed or neutered within 30 days of adoption.

* Adoption fee: $15.00.

* You must live in Galax, Carroll, Grayson or an adjoining Virginia county to adopt an animal.

Code of Virginia 3.2-6546.D.(2)(3)(4) states:
2. Adoption by a resident of the county or city where the shelter is operated and who will pay the required license fee, if any, on such animal, provided that such resident has read and signed a statement specifying that he has never been convicted of animal cruelty, neglect, or abandonment;
3. Adoption by a resident of an adjacent political subdivision of the Commonwealth, if the resident has read and signed a statement specifying that he has never been convicted of animal cruelty, neglect, or abandonment;
4. Adoption by any other person, provided that such person has read and signed a statement specifying that he has never been convicted of animal cruelty, neglect, or abandonment and provided that no dog or cat may be adopted by any person who is not a resident of the county or city where the shelter is operated, or of an adjacent political subdivision, unless the dog or cat is first sterilized, and the shelter may require that the sterilization be done at the expense of the person adopting the dog or cat.

* Funds are currently available for up to 100% reimbursement to you for spaying or neutering your animal through a grant with the City of Galax and Twin County Humane Society, Inc. For more information regarding this reimbursement program, call 276-728-4038.
